Mikumi National Park

Mikumi National Park

Mikumi National Park, located in southern Tanzania, is often described as a “mini-Serengeti” because of its open plains and abundant wildlife. Covering about 3,230 square kilometers, it is the fourth-largest national park in Tanzania and forms part of the vast Selous ecosystem, one of the largest wildlife areas in Africa. Easily accessible from Dar es Salaam (just a 4–5 hour drive), Mikumi is a popular choice for short safaris and an excellent introduction to Tanzania’s southern circuit.

The park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, hippos, and crocodiles, along with more than 400 species of birds. Its open landscapes, dominated by the Mkata floodplain, make animal spotting easy and rewarding, while the Uluguru Mountains and Udzungwa Mountains provide a stunning backdrop.

Best Time to Visit Mikumi National Park

Mikumi National Park can be visited year-round, with each season offering unique experiences. From June to October, the dry season is the best time for game viewing, as animals concentrate around the Mkata River and waterholes. Clear skies, thinner vegetation, and excellent lighting conditions also make this the perfect season for photography. Between November and May, the park transforms into a lush green paradise, with breathtaking scenery and an abundance of birdlife, including migratory species. While wildlife is still present during this time, animals tend to be more scattered due to plentiful water sources. In short, the dry season is ideal for wildlife spotting, while the wet season is perfect for scenery, birdwatching, and enjoying a more peaceful safari with fewer crowds.
